Chandigarh/Kapurthala, Feb 6: Income Tax officials on Thursday raided several premises linked to Congress MLA Rana Gurjit Singh in Kapurthala and Chandigarh. The raids were conducted since morning at three locations in Chandigarh and a few in Kapurthala. According to sources, Income Tax Department teams raided Rana Gurjit Singh’s residence and mill in Kapurthala as well as his properties in Sector 4 and 9 of Chandigarh. Raids were also conducted at flat number 53 of the MLA’s hostel in Chandigarh.
One of the richest MLAs in Punjab is Rana Gurjit Singh, who has a diversified business in distilleries, sugar mills in Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. His son Rana Inder Pratap Singh is an independent MLA from Sultanpur Lodhi. The family also owns two ethanol plants in Punjab; one of them is located in Buttar village in Amritsar.
So far the government has not confirmed why the raids were conducted. However, such actions are usually linked to allegations of tax evasion or financial misconduct. More details will be known in the coming hours as the searches continue.
This has sparked political debate in the state of Punjab as opposition leaders have questioned the timing and motive of the move, but the Congress party is yet to make any official statement.
