Himachal Pradesh’s administrative machinery has come under sharp scrutiny after legislators alleged that senior bureaucrats are not responding to their phone calls. The issue sparked strong reactions inside the Vidhan Sabha, where lawmakers demanded accountability and immediate corrective steps.

The matter was raised by Rakesh Kalia, who represents Gagret in Una district. Speaking during the Assembly session, Kalia expressed frustration over what he described as the “indifferent” attitude of certain officers. He said that MLAs often struggle to get through to officials even when they are calling to raise urgent public issues concerning their constituencies.

Kalia questioned why officers should continue receiving telephone allowances if they do not attend calls from elected representatives. He argued that MLAs serve as a bridge between the public and the government, and ignoring their calls directly affects people who rely on them for solutions to everyday problems. As he voiced his concerns, several MLAs across party lines thumped their desks in agreement, indicating that the problem may be more widespread than a single complaint.

Taking serious note of the allegation, Kuldeep Pathania intervened in the House. He termed the issue “very serious” and assured members that it would not be ignored. Pathania asked Kalia to submit the names of the concerned officers in writing to the Vidhan Sabha Secretariat so that appropriate action could be initiated. He emphasized that not responding to calls from MLAs, who are public representatives, reflects poorly on administrative accountability.

Kalia did not stop at raising the issue. He warned that if the situation continued, he would bring 200 people to the state capital and stage a dharna against such officials. He urged the Chief Minister to take stern action and ensure that officers remain accessible and responsive to legislators seeking to resolve public grievances.

The controversy has once again highlighted the delicate balance between the political leadership and the bureaucracy in Himachal Pradesh. In the past, even ministers have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over the unresponsive attitude of certain senior officials. The latest development suggests that communication gaps within the governance system are becoming a growing concern.

For citizens, the issue may appear technical, but its impact can be significant. When MLAs cannot easily connect with department heads or senior officers, delays in addressing local issues become inevitable.
