Srinagar, December 28, 2024 – Kashmir Valley was brought to a standstill on Thursday as the first snowfall of the season cast its spell across the Valley. Heavy snowfall has occurred in several districts of the Valley, including Baramulla, where all roads have been cut off. The region has thus become almost isolated from the rest of the country.
The arterial Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and the Mughal Road have also been closed with severe weather conditions. Latest reports put the number of stranded vehicles at around 2,000 in the Qazigund township of the district Anantnag that has no clue when such relief will take place for them. Road clearance by snow is operational, though icy road surfaces continue to impede proceedings.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of Jammu and Kashmir, who was coming from Jammu to Srinagar, termed the situation “treacherous.” He said that his office has been in constant touch with South Kashmir’s administration to arrange snow clearance work and help stranded passengers.
“I drove from Jammu to Srinagar today. It snowed continuously from Banihal to Srinagar. The conditions were quite treacherous. Around 2,000 vehicles are stuck between the tunnel and Qazigund. Snow clearance has been done, but the road remains icy,” Abdullah wrote on X.

Flight Operations Hit Hard
The heavy snowfall has also disrupted flight operations at Srinagar Airport, with 80% of flights cancelled. The remaining flights are on standby but are likely to face cancellations due to reduced visibility. Despite a cleared runway, poor visibility has rendered landings unsafe.
“Due to bad weather conditions all flights at Srinagar Airport have been cancelled. Passengers are advised to contact their airlines for an update. We regret the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding,” read an official statement issued by the airport authorities.
Kashmir University Exams Postponed
Due to the unfavorable weather, the University of Kashmir has postponed all examinations scheduled for December 28, 2024. In a notification issued by the university, it stated that new dates for the deferred exams will be announced later.
Sub-zero temperatures in the valley have complicated things for the residents and authorities. Power supply is out in some areas, among other essential services, complicating things.
As efforts are made to clear roads and restore connectivity, the administration has asked residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Passengers stranded at the airport and on roads are asked to stay in touch with authorities for updates and assistance.
Stay tuned for further updates on the developing weather situation in Kashmir.
