Govt Plans 400 New BSNL Towers in Naxalite-Affected and Remote Areas of Chhattisgarh

The Central Government of India has announced an ambitious plan to install 400 new BSNL towers in Naxalite-affected and remote areas of Chhattisgarh to strengthen digital communication and bridge the connectivity gap in these underserved regions. The initiative, revealed by Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Telecommunications, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, aims to transform the digital landscape of the state by improving network access and internet services.

Boosting Digital Connectivity in Chhattisgarh

According to the news agency PTI, Minister Pemmasani confirmed that the project will be implemented in a phased manner, ensuring that necessary approvals from security forces and the forest department are obtained before the installation of towers. This strategic move underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure in Left-Wing Extremist (LWE) areas.

“The Central government is working on a plan to install 400 new BSNL towers in the Naxal-affected and remote areas of Chhattisgarh to strengthen digital communication,” Pemmasani said during his visit to Raipur on Sunday, 27 July 2025.

The minister chaired a high-level review meeting in Raipur, which saw the participation of senior officials from multiple departments and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). The meeting focused on accelerating the digital transformation of rural and tribal regions, with BSNL playing a crucial role in providing high-quality 4G connectivity across the country.

BSNL’s Role in Rural Digital Expansion

BSNL, the state-owned telecom operator, has been actively rolling out 4G services in rural and remote areas. The installation of 400 new towers is expected to significantly boost internet coverage and facilitate seamless communication in areas that have long remained disconnected due to difficult terrain and security challenges.

“With this expansion, we are realizing the mission of delivering digital connectivity to the last village in the country,” Pemmasani emphasized.

Development in LWE-Affected Areas

The government’s focus on LWE-affected areas goes beyond digital connectivity. Minister Pemmasani highlighted that development initiatives are being undertaken in a mission mode, aiming to provide essential services at people’s doorsteps.

Key initiatives include:

  • Digitizing schools to help students prepare for competitive exams such as JEE and NEET.
  • Introducing special facilities for differently-abled students under inclusive education programs.
  • Promoting skill development and self-employment through Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

Empowering Women Through SHGs and the Pink Auto Scheme

The minister lauded the contribution of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in empowering women and promoting self-reliance. Initiatives like the ‘Pink Auto’ scheme in Chhattisgarh, which supports women drivers, are expected to serve as role models for other states.

“The SHGs are being linked with various schemes for providing financial assistance, training, and marketing opportunities. This is helping women become self-reliant and increasing avenues for self-employment,” Pemmasani noted.

Infrastructure and Flagship Schemes

The review meeting also shed light on the fast implementation of flagship schemes such as:

  • Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY)
  • Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G)
  • Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY)

The minister expressed satisfaction with the ongoing infrastructure development, which is expected to accelerate socio-economic growth in tribal and remote areas.

Conclusion

The installation of 400 new BSNL towers in Chhattisgarh marks a crucial step toward bridging the digital divide and ensuring inclusive development in remote and Naxalite-affected regions. By combining digital connectivity with education, skill development, and women empowerment initiatives, the government aims to create a sustainable and connected future for rural India.
