Punjab Police to Adopt Friendly Approach Towards US-Deported Immigrants: DGP Gaurav Yadav

Amritsar, Feb 4 – Punjab Director General of Police DGP Gaurav Yadav on Tuesday assured that the state government will adopt a friendly attitude towards immigrants deported from the US, as well as take proper precautions in checking their background.

Speaking to the media, DGP Yadav said that more than 200 illegal immigrants are expected to land at Amritsar airport on Wednesday through a special flight. He said, “We will ensure that they are treated respectfully. However, if any deported person has a criminal history, necessary action will be taken as per the law.”

The police officials have formed special teams to collect information about the entire route of illegal immigration undertaken by the deportees, including details of donkey routes and the role of travel agents who take advantage of people to enter the US illegally. “These people can give valuable information on the entire illegal immigration network,” an officer said. DGP Gaurav Yadav said, “The police will identify and verify each returning person in collaboration with central agencies.” “We are constantly in touch with the central agencies so that there is no breach of order in dealing with this situation,” he added.

Apart from the state police, the central agencies will also question and record the statements of the deported persons upon their arrival at the Amritsar airport at 8 am. The officials now want to use this opportunity to crack down on human trafficking networks that mislead people into illegal migration through false promises.

With the rising number of Punjabis attempting to migrate illegally, the state government is considering strengthening measures to prevent human trafficking and provide legal awareness to prevent such incidents in future.
