Chandigarh Police have filed an FIR against unidentified students and several outsiders after a violent confrontation erupted during a protest at Panjab University (PU) on November 10. The case, registered at the Sector 11 police station, comes after investigators reviewed detailed reports, CCTV footage, and videos of the incident.

The confrontation took place at Gate No. 1, where protesters allegedly attempted to storm the university premises despite prohibitory orders under Section 223 of the BNS. The protest was organised under the banner of the Panjab University Bachao Morcha, drawing students, activists, and individuals from outside the campus.
Protesters Accused of Breaking Barricades, Attacking Police
According to the FIR, the crowd removed police barricades, broke the gate lock, and tried to forcefully enter the campus. When officers stepped in to stop the group, a scuffle broke out, leaving several police personnel injured.
Among those hurt were DSP SPS Sondhi, Inspector Rohit Kumar (SHO, Sector 17), Senior Constable Vipin Sharma, and Sub-Inspector Pratibha. All injured officers were immediately taken to GMSH-16 and discharged after receiving first-aid.
Police allege that the protesters not only violated prohibitory orders but also obstructed government officials on duty, creating a serious threat to campus security.
Media Presence “Emboldened Crowd”, Says Police
Officials noted that the presence of media teams and photographers during the confrontation appeared to embolden some members of the crowd, further escalating the situation. As the tension grew, the gathering was declared an unlawful assembly.
The FIR has been registered under Sections 221, 223, 191(2), 190, 115(2), 121(1), and 132 of the BNS — covering unlawful assembly, assault on police, obstruction of duty, and forcible entry.
CCTV-Based Identification, Arrests Expected Soon
Police say they are reviewing CCTV footage, mobile videos, and photographs to identify the individuals involved. Notices and arrests are expected once the identification process is complete.
Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, who had earlier attempted to pacify protesters at the site, emphasised that maintaining law and order on university campuses remains a top priority. She stated that strict action will be taken against those responsible for disrupting peace.
Authorities Reinforce Commitment to Campus Security
Officials reiterated that disturbances inside educational institutions cannot be taken lightly, and the November 10 incident will be pursued as a serious breach of security.
With the investigation under way, the university community awaits further developments as police continue to identify the culprits behind the violent protest.
