Police in Jammu have launched a detailed investigation after a man allegedly opened fire at former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah during a wedding function in the city. The accused, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, reportedly told investigators that he had been waiting for nearly 20 years for an opportunity to target the veteran political leader.
The shocking incident took place on Wednesday night at a marriage ceremony in the Greater Kailash area on the outskirts of Jammu. Abdullah had attended the function and was leaving the venue when the accused allegedly fired a shot from behind. Security personnel accompanying the National Conference president immediately responded, overpowering the attacker before he could cause further harm. Their swift action ensured that Abdullah escaped the incident unharmed.
Police later recovered a licensed pistol from Jamwal’s possession, which is believed to have been used during the firing. Authorities quickly detained the suspect and began questioning him to understand the motive behind the attack. Officials said the accused claimed during interrogation that he had harboured intentions of targeting Abdullah for two decades and had been waiting for the right moment.
At the time of the incident, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and adviser to Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani were also present with Abdullah as they left the event. The presence of several senior political figures has raised concerns about how the accused managed to enter the venue with a firearm.
Investigators are now examining the background of the 63-year-old Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu. Police are looking into his personal history, social connections, and possible organisational links to determine whether the act was driven by personal grievances, political motives, or any external influence. Officials are also reviewing his recent movements and activities in the days leading up to the attack.
During questioning, Jamwal reportedly told police that he earns his livelihood through the rental income from his shops. Authorities are verifying these claims while checking his financial records and any associations that may help establish a clearer picture of his intentions.
Security arrangements at the wedding venue are also under review as part of the investigation. Police are trying to determine how the suspect managed to bring a weapon into the function despite the presence of security personnel accompanying senior political leaders.
