In a fiery press conference on Wednesday, Delhi CM Atishi slammed the recent newspaper advertisements that denied the existence of the Aam Aadmi Party’s welfare scheme, Mahila Samman Yojana. The scheme, announced by AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal earlier this week, promises a monthly financial aid of ₹2,100 for women residing in the national capital.
Atishi said the Bharatiya Janata Party was behind the campaign to discredit AAP initiatives by forcing government officials to publish false notices. “The notices published in newspapers today are wrong. The BJP, by putting pressure on a few officers, got this notice published,” Atishi said. She assured the public that administrative and police action would be taken against the officers responsible for the erroneous publication.
The controversy came out when the Women and Child Development Department of the Delhi Government published a public notice on Wednesday, saying it did not know anything about the Mahila Samman Yojana. According to national newspapers, it published that no such scheme had been notified by the Delhi Government and citizens must beware of fraudsters or political parties who may collect forms or other information in the name of this scheme.

“It is clarified that no such scheme has been notified by the Delhi Government. Since no such scheme is in existence, the question of accepting forms or applications for this non-existent scheme does not arise,” the notice read.
In response, Atishi again clarified that the scheme is valid and said, “The Mahila Samman Yojana has been notified by the Delhi Cabinet and is in the public domain.” She also claimed that the BJP was trying to scuttle the scheme and other welfare measures, such as the free bus service for women in Delhi.
She also said that all the false cases were an attack on AAP leaders themselves, which included her also. “Even if they arrest me, I have faith in the legal system and the Constitution. Despite their false cases, I will get bail,” she added.
This controversy highlights the ongoing political tussle between AAP and BJP in Delhi. The Mahila Samman Yojana, if implemented, could significantly benefit women by providing financial support and empowerment. However, the current discord raises questions about the challenges welfare schemes face amidst political rivalries.
The Delhi Government would be issuing further clarifications to end the confusion with the scheme and reassure people of their commitment to doing what they promise.
