
New Delhi, February 5, 2025: The Delhi Assembly Election 2025 is underway in all 70 constituencies, with 8.1% voter turnout recorded in the initial hours of polling. The national capital is witnessing a triangular contest between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Indian National Congress (INC). Security has been beefed up across the city to ensure smooth and peaceful polling.
With Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs), officials started arriving at their designated polling stations by Tuesday evening. The Election Commission of India has requested all voters in the country to cast their votes. Several special measures have been taken to facilitate elderly and differently-abled voters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also appealed to Delhiites to come out in large numbers to cast their first-time voters’ ballots.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar voted at Tughlaq Crescent along with his wife Kyoko Jaishankar. AAP leader and Jangpura MLA candidate Manish Sisodia also cast his vote along with his wife.

AAP Convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appealed to voters to choose a “respectful life” by voting for his party. BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah appealed to people to vote against “false promises” and address issues such as a polluted Yamuna, broken roads and inadequate public services.
Heavy security arrangements
To ensure free and fair elections, over 30,000 Delhi Police personnel and 220 paramilitary force companies have been deployed across the city. Tight security checks are being done, especially in border areas.
As the counting of votes continues, political statements and controversies are still at the forefront. Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami appealed to voters to “root out corruption”. BJP leader Parvesh Verma criticised Kejriwal over the unfulfilled promise of cleaning the Yamuna river. Meanwhile, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal has been booked for his statement in which he alleged that the Haryana government has “poisoned” the Yamuna water.
1.56 crore voters will ultimately decide the fate of 699 candidates, including 83,76 lakh men, 72,36 lakh women and 1,267 third-gender voters. The counting of votes will take place on February 8, which will decide the political future of the next five years in Delhi.
