Delhi AQI Update: Delhi’s air quality deteriorates to ‘very poor’ with AQI at 301; Wazirpur records hazardous level of 410. IMD forecasts light rain and gusty winds. Check area-wise AQI and health advisory.

New Delhi, May 16, 2025: Delhi woke up to a choking blanket of polluted air on Friday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) plunging into the ‘very poor’ category, signaling an alarming dip in the city’s air health. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the average AQI at 7 am stood at 301, a sharp rise from 236 recorded a day earlier.
The drastic drop in air quality is being attributed to dust-laden winds blowing in from western Rajasthan, which have brought an increase in particulate matter, especially PM2.5 levels — tiny particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause severe respiratory issues.
Wazirpur Records ‘Severe’ AQI of 410 – Highest in the City
The Wazirpur area topped the pollution charts this morning with an AQI of 410, entering the ‘severe’ category, followed closely by Mundka at 406 and Anand Vihar at 352. These figures highlight the hazardous breathing conditions residents are currently facing.
On the other end, ITO reported the lowest AQI at 216, which, while comparatively better, still falls under the ‘poor’ category.

Delhi Weather Forecast Today: Relief in Sight?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted very light rainfall in isolated parts of the city today. The light showers, along with gusty winds clocking 30–40 kmph, may help disperse pollutants and bring some short-term relief from the toxic air.
According to IMD:
- Maximum Temperature: 40–42°C
- Minimum Temperature: 25–27°C
- Sky Condition: Partly cloudy
- Evening Wind Speed: May reach up to 50 kmph temporarily
Health Advisory: What You Should Do
Given the current AQI levels, health experts advise residents — especially children, elderly, and those with respiratory conditions — to stay indoors as much as possible. Using air purifiers, wearing N95 masks, and keeping windows shut can help reduce exposure to harmful pollutants.
Understanding the AQI Categories:
- 0–50: Good
- 51–100: Satisfactory
- 101–200: Moderate
- 201–300: Poor
- 301–400: Very Poor
- 401–500: Severe
Delhi’s recurring pollution problem is once again making headlines — this time during the peak of summer. While temporary weather changes may bring momentary improvement, long-term solutions are urgently needed to combat this public health crisis. Citizens, too, must play their part in reducing emissions and staying informed.
Stay safe, stay alert — because breathing clean air should not be a luxury.
