Murshidabad Violence: Governor Bose Defies Mamata’s Plea, Visits Ground Zero to “See Realities for Himself”

Kolkata, April 18,Murshidabad Violence: In a bold and defiant move, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited violence-hit regions of Malda and Murshidabad on Friday, despite Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s request to postpone the trip. The visit follows violent clashes that erupted during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, leaving three dead and several injured.

Governor Travels by Train, Heads Straight to Ground Zero

Governor Bose boarded a train from Sealdah Railway Station early Friday morning and reached Malda, where he was received by officials at the Circuit House. Without delay, he headed straight to the worst-affected areas to take stock of the situation first-hand.

He is scheduled to continue his tour in Murshidabad, where the violence was particularly intense. This includes interacting with displaced families and local authorities.

“I am going to the field to see for myself the realities. I want an objective view of the matter,” Bose told reporters before leaving.

CM Mamata Banerjee’s Caution Ignored

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had urged the Governor to wait “a few more days” before visiting the disturbed areas, citing ongoing confidence-building measures. However, the Governor chose to move ahead, stating that Raj Bhavan’s priority is the welfare of victims, in collaboration with both state and central governments.

🗨️ “Raj Bhavan will do everything possible for the victims in coordination with the State and Central government,” Bose affirmed.

April 11 Violence: What Really Happened?

Violence broke out on April 11 during protests against the amended Waqf Act, resulting in three fatalities, including a father-son duo. The unrest saw:

  • Police vehicles pelted with stones
  • A Glock pistol snatched from an SDPO officer
  • Public property damaged
  • Multiple injuries and arrests

The chaos led to mass displacement, with many families reportedly fleeing to Jharkhand’s Pakur district, while others have taken shelter in relief camps in Malda.

Calcutta High Court Intervenes

In response to the deteriorating law and order situation, the Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in Murshidabad. The court also emphasized:

  • Monitoring rehabilitation efforts
  • Preventing provocative speeches from political parties
  • Ensuring peace and order

Locals Demand BSF Camp

Interestingly, during his visit, Governor Bose revealed that many locals are requesting a permanent BSF camp in the region to deter future outbreaks of violence.

“The situation is under control, but we must ensure it never happens again,” he said.
