Chandigarh Sector 37 Blast: BJP Says Punjab Leader Ashwani Sharma May Have Been Target

Chandigarh Sector 37 Blast: A low-intensity blast outside the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Sector 37 of Chandigarh on Wednesday has raised serious security concerns. The explosion occurred near the party’s Punjab office and triggered a quick response from police and security agencies. Authorities rushed to the spot soon after the blast, sealed off the area, and began an investigation into the incident.

Chandigarh Blast: BJP Says Punjab Leader Ashwani Sharma May Have Been Target

Soon after the development, BJP national spokesperson RP Singh said the explosion could have been linked to Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma. According to Singh, Sharma had been present at the same office for the past two days before leaving for Delhi earlier in the day for a political programme. Singh said the timing of the blast raises questions that investigators must carefully examine.

In a message shared on social media, Singh described the incident as “shocking and deeply concerning.” He pointed out that Sharma had recently received a warning regarding a potential threat. Around two weeks ago, police in Pathankot had reportedly advised Sharma to avoid his routine morning walks due to a specific security threat. While there is no confirmation yet of any connection between that warning and the blast, BJP leaders say the coincidence cannot be ignored and needs thorough investigation.

Police teams quickly reached the BJP office after the explosion and began collecting evidence from the site. Initial reports suggest the blast was of low intensity and caused limited damage to the surrounding area. No injuries or casualties have been reported so far, which officials described as fortunate considering the location of the incident.

Investigators are examining CCTV footage from nearby buildings and questioning people who were present in the area at the time of the blast. Forensic experts are also working to determine the type of explosive used and whether the incident was intended as a targeted attack or a warning.

The explosion has triggered a political response as well, with BJP leaders raising concerns about security and law and order. Singh said the matter goes beyond political rivalry and highlights the need for strong security coordination and intelligence monitoring.

He stated that acts of violence near political offices should be taken extremely seriously and those responsible must be identified and punished without delay. According to him, there must be zero tolerance for such incidents that threaten democratic institutions and public safety.

Following the blast, security has been tightened across important locations in Chandigarh. Police patrols have increased, and intelligence agencies have been alerted to monitor any suspicious activity. Authorities are expected to release more details once the forensic examination and preliminary investigation are completed.
