Chandigarh, June 24:Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu, has conducted a comprehensive review of the ongoing redevelopment work at Chandigarh Railway Station, marking a significant development for the Tricity region.
The Railways Ministry is swiftly executing the ambitious Rs 462-crore project, which has already achieved 81% physical progress and now targets completion by October 2025.

The minister chaired a high-level meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday, where senior officials from the Ministry of Railways, Railway Board, Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), and Northern Railways participated.
They assessed the project’s progress and strategized ways to expedite the pending components. Minister Bittu instructed the officials to accelerate the remaining work and minimize disruption to passengers, especially during peak hours.

Chandigarh Railway Station Redevelopment Project Highlights
RLDA is executing the redevelopment under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) model, covering a total development area of 1,92,248 square meters with a built-up area of 27,383 square meters.
Key features include:
- New G+3 station buildings on both the Chandigarh and Panchkula sides, each spanning 8,367 square meters, aimed at enhancing accessibility and managing growing footfalls efficiently.
- A 72-meter-wide and 80-meter-long covered concourse will offer seamless and weather-protected movement across platforms.
- Engineers are constructing two 12-meter-wide foot over bridges (FOBs) to streamline inter-platform transfers.
The project team is developing a dedicated parking space of 24,515 square meters with integrated traffic flow designs for both city sides to improve vehicular movement and commuter convenience.
Future-Ready Facilities for Over One Lakh Daily Passengers
The authorities will equip the upgraded station with:
- 30 lifts and 10 escalators for barrier-free access
- Enhanced waiting areas, including a 1,180 square meter concourse with seating capacity for 1,050 passengers
- Modern food courts, retail outlets, retiring rooms, and co-working spaces
- Paid lounges and commuter-centric amenities
- 4,000 square meter commercial area, including kiosks, eateries, and shopping spaces
Planners have envisioned the station as a multifunctional transit and commercial hub, designed to cater to over 1 lakh daily passengers by 2061 while seamlessly integrating transport, retail, and public utility services.
