Chandigarh introduces service-based learning for students

Chandigarh has taken a historic step in education with the launch of a ‘Sewa’ curriculum across all 209 government and private schools in the city. The initiative, announced by the Education Department, will begin during Sewa Pakhwara 2025 (September 17 to October 2).

The move aims to instill selfless service, compassion, and civic responsibility in students, making service-learning an integral part of classroom education.

What the ‘Sewa’ curriculum offers

A structured plan has been designed for Classes VI to XII, introducing a dedicated “sewa period in the weekly timetable. Each month will focus on a specific value such as:

  • Gratitude
  • Kindness
  • Inclusion
  • Environmental care
  • Digital literacy

Students will not only study these values but also practice them through hands-on activities and community engagement.

Activities to nurture empathy and action

The curriculum will combine life skills with meaningful service. Some key activities include:

  • Peer tutoring for classmates needing academic help
  • Digital literacy workshops for senior citizens
  • Gratitude days to honor support staff and sanitation workers
  • Teaching sessions for underprivileged children
  • Inspirational wall art with positive messages
  • Cleanliness and fitness drives in schools and public parks

Reflection journals, peer recognition programs, and collaborations with NSS/NCC will strengthen these experiences and encourage a city-wide culture of giving back.

Leaders on the importance of ‘Sewa’

Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria emphasized that education must go beyond academics:

“By embedding ‘sewa’ into the learning process, Chandigarh is setting an example for the rest of the country.”

Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma said the initiative would shape a generation that works collectively towards a stronger, more inclusive India.

Education Secretary Prerna Puri highlighted the transformative impact:

“This curriculum will ensure that students engage meaningfully with their communities and understand the dignity of service.”

Director School Education Harsuhinder Pal Singh Brar added that the program reflects a commitment to holistic education, allowing students to learn by serving and grow by giving.

Nation-building through education

The ‘Sewa’ curriculum aligns with the vision of creating responsible and compassionate citizens dedicated to national progress. By embedding values of morality, unity, and service, the initiative seeks to strengthen the fabric of Indian society and promote an inclusive, empathetic, and sustainable future.

A new chapter for Chandigarh schools

The rollout covers 111 government schools and 98 private, aided, and Central Government institutions. With this step, Chandigarh opens a new chapter in experiential and value-based education, setting a precedent for other states to follow.
