Patna, Bihar – June 27, 2025: In a shocking incident that has raised serious questions about law and order in Bihar, senior BJP leader Surendra Kewat was allegedly shot dead by unidentified assailants in Sheikhpura district on Thursday. The incident comes barely a week after the daylight murder of businessman Gopal Khemka in Patna, amplifying political tensions and public outrage across the state.
Who Was Surendra Kewat?
Surendra Kewat, 52, was a prominent face of the BJP Kisan Morcha in Bihar and had previously served as the President of the unit in Punpun. Known for his grassroots connect and strong support among the farming community, Kewat was regarded as a committed political worker preparing for the upcoming Assembly elections.
According to police officials, the BJP leader was working in his agricultural fields in Sheikhpura when two motorcycle-borne men approached and opened fire. Eyewitnesses claim that he was shot four times before the attackers fled the scene. Locals immediately rushed Kewat to AIIMS Patna, where he succumbed to his injuries despite critical medical intervention.
Motive Unknown, Investigation Underway
As of now, the motive behind the murder remains unclear. A postmortem examination is underway and the police have stated that an FIR will be registered once an official complaint is filed by the family. The area has been cordoned off and a forensic team is examining the crime scene. Top officials from the Bihar Police have reached Sheikhpura and have assured a thorough investigation.
Rising Crime Wave Raises Alarm
This brutal killing comes hot on the heels of the murder of businessman Gopal Khemka, who was gunned down outside his Patna residence just last week. The back-to-back high-profile murders have sparked fear and unrest among the public and have given the Opposition a sharp stick to beat the ruling NDA government with.
Political Reactions: Tejashwi Yadav Targets NDA Government
Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of the Opposition and RJD leader, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Bihar. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:
“And now, a BJP leader shot dead in Patna! What to say, and to whom? Is there anyone in the NDA government willing to listen to the truth or admit their mistakes? Everyone knows about the CM’s health, but what are the two useless BJP deputy chief ministers doing?”
Yadav’s sharp remarks have further intensified the political slugfest, with opposition leaders demanding immediate accountability and stronger policing in the run-up to the elections.
Public Fear and Political Pressure Mounting
The double murders have sent shockwaves across Bihar’s political landscape. Citizens and political observers alike are now questioning the state’s preparedness to conduct free and fair elections in such a tense environment.
Security has been beefed up in several districts, especially those considered politically sensitive. Senior BJP leaders are also expected to meet and chalk out a strategy to counter the political and security fallout of Kewat’s murder.
