The encounter took place in the dense forests of Indravati National Park area where a joint team of security forces was conducting an anti-Naxal operation.
A senior police officer said the operation was part of efforts to tackle Naxal activity in the area. The encounter started early in the morning and continued for several hours, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. 12 Naxalites were reported killed in the firing, while two security personnel killed in the encounter belonged to the state police DRG and one to the Special Task Force (STF). Bodies of 12 Naxalites were recovered from the encounter site. Apart from the casualties, two other security officials were injured during the fighting, and efforts are being made to retrieve the bodies of the security personnel killed while taking the injured security officials to the hospital for treatment.
The encounter highlights the ongoing challenges in Chhattisgarh, where security forces have been fighting a long-running battle against Naxal insurgents in forests and remote areas. While the deaths of Naxalites and security personnel are part of the complex conflict, authorities are working to keep pressure on insurgent groups and protect the local population from Naxal violence.
More details are likely to emerge as authorities review the situation and continue to investigate the encounter. The names of the Naxalites killed in the encounter are still unknown.
It is another reminder of the instability in some areas of Chhattisgarh, where Naxalite outfits often pose challenges to security forces and confrontations often escalate to violent levels, turning deadly.
