Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Vikramaditya Singh has issued a firm warning to tourists visiting the hill state, urging them to behave responsibly and respect local culture or face strict action under the law. The minister’s remarks come amid growing concerns over videos circulating on social media that allegedly show tourists engaging in inappropriate behaviour in public spaces.

Minister Responds to Viral Videos
In recent days, several photos and videos have surfaced online showing tourists dressed in revealing clothes and behaving in ways that many locals consider objectionable. Some of these visuals reportedly feature inappropriate conduct near religious sites, on public roads, and in other sensitive areas.
Reacting to the controversy, Minister Vikramaditya Singh took to social media to make the government’s position clear. While reiterating that tourists are always welcome in Himachal Pradesh, he emphasized that actions which hurt the state’s cultural and spiritual values will not be tolerated.
‘Dev Bhoomi’ Deserves Respect
Calling Himachal Pradesh “Dev Bhoomi,” or the land of gods, the minister stressed that the state is not merely a tourist destination but a region deeply rooted in spirituality, culture, and centuries-old traditions.
“Himachal is not just about sightseeing. It is a sacred land with a rich cultural heritage,” Singh said in his post. He added that behaviour that disrespects this identity deeply hurts the sentiments of local communities.
Concerns Over Conduct at Religious and Public Places
The minister expressed particular concern over reports of inappropriate photo shoots and unruly behaviour near temples and other religious locations. According to him, such actions amount to disrespecting local faith and traditions.
He urged visitors to be mindful of local customs, dress modestly in sensitive areas, and avoid actions that could disturb public order or offend cultural sensibilities.
Warning of Legal Action and Community Response
Issuing a clear warning, Singh said that anyone found disrespecting the culture or faith of Himachal Pradesh would face legal consequences. He also cautioned that such behaviour could provoke strong reactions from local communities.
“If anyone disrespects our culture and faith, they will face the consequences of the law and a strong reaction from the community,” the minister stated.
Push for Responsible Tourism
The statement reflects the state government’s broader push for responsible and sustainable tourism. Officials have repeatedly highlighted the need for tourists to act as respectful guests, especially as Himachal Pradesh witnesses a surge in visitor numbers during peak seasons.
The government believes that preserving cultural dignity and social harmony is essential for maintaining Himachal’s image as a peaceful and welcoming destination.
