BCB Clarifies ‘No Handshake’ Incident at U19 World Cup, Calls It Unintentional

The moment, which occurred just before the start of play, quickly caught attention as there was no customary handshake between the captains at the toss. The incident sparked speculation, particularly in light of the currently sensitive diplomatic relations between the two neighbouring countries. However, the BCB categorically denied any deliberate intent behind the omission.

According to the board, Bangladesh’s regular Under-19 captain Md Azizul Hakim Tamim was unable to attend the toss due to illness. In his absence, vice-captain Zawad Abrar stepped in to represent the team, while India was led by Ayush Mhatre. The change in leadership at the toss, the board explained, contributed to the momentary oversight.

In its official statement, the BCB emphasized that there was no intention to show disrespect or disregard towards the Indian team. The board said the absence of a handshake was purely accidental and should not be interpreted as a breach of sporting etiquette or a reflection of strained relations between the two sides.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board also underlined that it views such matters with seriousness, as respect for opponents and adherence to the spirit of cricket are fundamental principles for representing the country at any level. Following the incident, the board immediately advised the team management and reminded players of their responsibility to uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship.

Players have been cautioned to maintain professionalism, camaraderie, and mutual respect in all interactions with opposing teams, both on and off the field. The board reiterated that symbolic gestures like handshakes are an important part of cricket’s traditions and values.

Reaffirming its stance, the BCB said it remains fully committed to the core values of the game and continues to promote fair play, respect, and integrity. The board concluded by stressing that the Under-19 team represents Bangladesh with responsibility and discipline, and the incident should be viewed as an honest mistake rather than a deliberate act.
