Assam Police Register FIR Against YouTubers Over 'India's Got Latent' Controversy

Guwahati/Mumbai, February 10: The Assam Police have registered an FIR against several prominent YouTubers, including Samay Raina, Ranveer Allahbadia, Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, and Apoorva Makhija, over allegations of promoting obscenity in the online show India’s Got Latent. Assam Chief Minister announced the action on Twitter, stating that legal proceedings have been initiated following social media outrage over certain remarks made during the show.

The Guwahati Crime Branch has cited multiple legal provisions, including Sections 79, 95, 294, and 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, Section 67 of the IT Act, 2000, and various clauses from the Cinematograph Act and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities determined to identify and take strict action against those involved.

Mumbai Police Joins Probe

In addition to the FIR in Assam, complaints have been filed with the Mumbai Commissioner and the Maharashtra Women’s Commission, urging legal action against the accused. Following these complaints, a team from the Mumbai Police visited the Khar studio where India’s Got Latent was filmed to gather further evidence regarding the controversial content.

Guwahati Joint Police Commissioner Ankur Jain elaborated on the matter, stating, “We received an FIR detailing how certain YouTubers made inappropriate comments regarding familial relationships, presenting them in an obscene manner. The primary host of the show was Samay Raina, while the controversial remark was made by Ranveer Allahbadia. Investigations are underway to hold all responsible parties accountable.”

The controversy erupted after Allahbadia’s comments during a segment of India’s Got Latent sparked severe backlash on social media. Users condemned the remarks, calling them inappropriate and offensive. The outrage ultimately led to legal action against the show’s participants and organizers.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the matter, acknowledging the controversy but stating that he had not yet reviewed the content personally. He emphasized that while freedom of speech is crucial, it should not violate societal norms or infringe on others’ rights. “If any individual has crossed the line, appropriate legal action should be taken,” Fadnavis stated.

Ongoing Investigation

With mounting scrutiny and legal proceedings in motion, the fate of India’s Got Latent and its creators remains uncertain. Authorities in both Assam and Maharashtra have assured strict measures to address the concerns raised by the public. The investigation continues as law enforcement agencies work to ensure accountability and compliance with legal standards.
