Anna University Rape Case: The Tamil Nadu Police has come under sharp criticism in the wake of the Sexual assault case Anna University where the Madras High Court heavily criticized them for revealing the identity of the 19-year-old victim. The breach of privacy has caused wide concern and the court warned that such lapses could discourage victims and their families from reporting crimes.
In a sharp rebuke on Friday, a Vacation Bench consisting of Justice SM Subramaniam and Justice V Lakshminarayan questioned how the First Information Report (FIR) containing sensitive information about the victim was leaked to the public.
The court pointed out that the victim’s identity has exposed her family to extreme emotional turmoil. “Who will answer for the trauma the family is going through because of this carelessness?” the Bench sought to know, directing authorities to give a detailed account.
The judges also mentioned that such a breach could deter other victims from reporting the crime. “Parents might hesitate to approach the police, fearing that their child’s privacy could be compromised,” observed the court.
The hearing was sent to Saturday, with the court demanding an urgent response from the police. The judges stressed that while punitive measures can address some aspects of the incident, the harm caused to the victim and her family is irreversible.
The Bench called upon the students of Anna University to come out and share any details they may have about the case. “The parents of all students will now be afraid to approach the police. We are concerned about that too, and we request all students to cooperate in the investigation,” the court declared.
Anna University Assault Case
The incident took place on December 23, when the victim, a student at Anna University, was allegedly sexually assaulted on campus. The accused, identified as Gnanasekaran, a roadside biryani vendor, was arrested by the Chennai Police on December 25.
The victim had lodged complaints with both the police and the university’s Internal Complaints Committee. Before the judges, the court had been severely critical of the Commissioner of Police for claiming, too soon, that only one person was involved, where the investigation was still underway.
The incident has caused much outcry among students, parents, and activists who are calling for stronger measures to ensure campus safety and protection of privacy.
The Madras High Court has taken a firm stand, demanding that the police address the lapses in handling the case. It also stressed the importance of protecting the identity of victims in sensitive cases to encourage more people to report crimes without fear.
