New Delhi/Imphal:
Manipur Security Crisis: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to hold a crucial meeting on Monday to review the security situation in the strife-torn state of Manipur. The meeting will be attended by top officials, including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, and Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, as the central government seeks to address the ongoing unrest in the northeastern state.
Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence since May last year, and tensions have flared again following the recent recovery of bodies of women and children, which has triggered widespread protests and violence. On Sunday, Shah cancelled his election rallies in Maharashtra to focus on the deteriorating situation in Manipur.
According to sources, the Home Minister is expected to formulate a strategy to deal with the “volatile” situation. The unrest escalated over the weekend when irate mobs set fire to the homes of three BJP legislators, including a senior minister, and a Congress MLA in different parts of the Imphal Valley. Security forces also thwarted an attempt by agitators to storm the ancestral residence of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.
An indefinite curfew was imposed in Imphal Valley on Saturday after enraged protesters, reacting to the killings of three women and three children by suspected militants in Jiribam district, attacked the homes of three state ministers and six MLAs. Despite heightened security, the protests have shown no signs of abating, with the anger of the local population spilling over into the streets.
Shah’s review meeting is expected to address immediate measures to restore law and order in the region. The Centre has also intensified consultations with state leaders and officials to ensure swift action against those responsible for the violence.
The situation in Manipur remains tense, with calls for peace and justice echoing across the state. All eyes are now on the outcome of today’s high-level meeting as the government works to stabilize the situation and bring relief to the affected communities.
