The Bharatiya Janata Party is set to make a significant political statement in Punjab by holding its first solo political stage at the Rakharpunya Jor Mela in Baba Bakala on August 28. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan are expected to lead the BJP’s show of strength, as the party steps up preparations for the 2027 Punjab Assembly election.
The decision carries added political significance because it comes at a time when speculation about a possible renewed alliance between the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal has once again gained attention. Rather than sharing the platform with its former ally, the BJP has chosen to organise an independent event at one of Punjab’s most politically significant religious gatherings.
BJP Amritsar president Salil Kapoor confirmed the party’s plans and described the event as a major mobilisation exercise in the Majha region. He said party workers were already working on arrangements and indicated that senior national leaders would participate.
“It will be a show of strength for us and party workers are working on the arrangements. We expect some senior national leaders to share the stage and give impetus to our outreach programme,” Kapoor said.
BJP Signals Independent Political Strategy
The Baba Bakala event marks a new phase in the BJP’s Punjab strategy. The party has already indicated that it is preparing to contest all 117 Assembly seats independently in the 2027 election.
The decision to organise a separate stage at the Jor Mela reinforces that message. For the BJP, the event is not simply another political gathering. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate organisational strength, mobilise workers and expand its presence beyond the urban centres where the party has traditionally enjoyed stronger support.
The timing is also important. With the next Assembly election approaching, political parties in Punjab are increasingly focused on building their grassroots networks and establishing their presence across different regions.
For the BJP, the Majha region represents an important part of that effort. A large turnout at Baba Bakala could allow the party to project itself as a serious contender in Punjab rather than merely an urban or alliance-dependent political force.
Why Baba Bakala Jor Mela Matters
Rakharpunya Jor Mela holds a special place in Punjab’s religious and political landscape. Baba Bakala is associated with the revelation of Guru Tegh Bahadur as the ninth Sikh Guru, giving the annual gathering considerable religious significance.
Over the years, major political parties have viewed such gatherings as important platforms for connecting with voters and engaging with wider Sikh and regional concerns. The Jor Mela therefore carries significance beyond the traditional boundaries of a religious event.
Political parties often use the gathering to assess public sentiment, mobilise supporters and communicate their positions on issues affecting Punjab. The scale of participation can also become a visible measure of organisational strength.
Against this backdrop, the BJP’s decision to establish its own stage is likely to attract considerable political attention.
Alliance Speculation Adds to the Stakes
The solo event comes amid continued political discussion about whether the BJP and SAD could eventually revive their alliance.
The two parties had shared a long political relationship before parting ways. Their alliance had played an important role in Punjab politics for several years, but changing political equations have since created a different electoral landscape.
The BJP’s latest move does not, by itself, rule out future political developments. However, the decision to hold a major independent event at Baba Bakala sends a clear organisational signal that the party is preparing for an independent electoral battle.
The BJP’s central leadership has already conveyed to its state organisation that it should prepare for all 117 Assembly constituencies. The message to grassroots workers has reportedly focused on ensuring strong participation at the Jor Mela.
That mobilisation could become an important test of the party’s organisational reach in rural Punjab.
Focus on Rural and Panthic Voters
The BJP has historically faced challenges in expanding its support base across rural Punjab. Its latest strategy appears aimed at addressing that gap by increasing direct engagement with rural and panthic voters.
Holding a political stage at Baba Bakala gives the party an opportunity to reach an audience that extends well beyond its conventional urban support base.
The event could also allow BJP leaders to speak directly about issues that dominate political discussions in Punjab, including agriculture, rural development, employment, law and order, federal relations and matters concerning the Sikh community.
However, winning greater acceptance among rural and panthic voters will require more than a single large gathering. The BJP will need sustained grassroots engagement, local leadership and a clear political narrative if it wants to convert mobilisation into electoral support.
Saini and Shivraj Chouhan Bring National Weight
The presence of Nayab Singh Saini and Shivraj Singh Chouhan adds national political weight to the event.
Saini, as Haryana Chief Minister, brings a neighbouring state’s political perspective to a gathering in Punjab. Haryana and Punjab share deep economic, agricultural and social connections, while several issues between the two states frequently feature in political debate.

The combination of senior leaders from the BJP’s central and state-level leadership could help the party create momentum around its campaign in the Majha region.
A Test of BJP’s Punjab Organisation
The August 28 gathering will also provide the BJP with an opportunity to demonstrate the strength of its state organisation.
A large turnout would allow the party to project confidence and show that it can mobilise supporters without relying on an alliance partner. It would also give BJP workers a platform to demonstrate their organisational capabilities ahead of the long electoral campaign.
At the same time, the event could provide political observers with an early indication of how successfully the BJP is building its grassroots machinery.
The party has been attempting to expand its independent footprint in Punjab, and the 2027 election will provide a major test of that strategy.
Punjab’s 2027 Contest Begins to Take Shape
The political contest for the 2027 Punjab Assembly election is already beginning to take shape, even though the election remains some distance away.
The ruling political forces will face challenges from multiple directions, while opposition parties will attempt to consolidate their support and expand their electoral base. In that environment, the BJP’s decision to prepare for an independent contest could add another dimension to an already competitive political field.

The Baba Bakala event is therefore significant not only because of the leaders attending it but also because of what the BJP wants the event to communicate: that it intends to build its own organisation, reach new sections of the electorate and enter the 2027 contest with an independent political identity.
“We are specialists in making a comeback, and we will do it well,” Kapoor said while appealing to BJP members to concentrate on grassroots mobilisation.
For the BJP, the Rakharpunya Jor Mela could thus become more than an annual gathering. It may serve as an early public test of the party’s ambition to expand across Punjab and establish itself as an independent force before the 2027 Assembly election.
