Agarwal, a resident of Gahunje near Pune, had travelled to Lohagad Fort with his fiancée and two close friends to celebrate his future bride’s birthday. The outing was supposed to be a joyful occasion. The couple was preparing for their wedding, which was scheduled for November, and family members reportedly viewed the trip as part of their pre-wedding celebrations.

According to the initial account provided to police, Agarwal was standing near a cliff at around 10:30 a.m. on June 19 when he lost his footing amid strong winds while taking photographs. Witnesses claimed he slipped and plunged nearly 400 feet into the valley below.

The incident triggered a major rescue effort involving local police personnel and members of the Shivdurg Mitra Emergency Rescue Team. The terrain surrounding Lohagad Fort is steep and difficult to navigate, making recovery operations particularly challenging. After nearly three hours of searching, rescuers retrieved Agarwal’s body from the gorge.

At the time, investigators registered an accidental death case and sent the body for post-mortem examination. Given the circumstances described by those present, there initially appeared to be little reason to suspect foul play.

The case, however, began to take a different direction as investigators examined witness statements, technical evidence and the sequence of events leading up to the fall.
