A fresh political and real estate controversy has emerged in Madhya Pradesh after a report by The Indian Express alleged that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s family has significantly expanded its land holdings in Ujjain, acquiring around 253 acres since he took office as a minister in 2021. The report has drawn attention not only because of the scale of the purchases but also due to the timing, as Ujjain undergoes rapid infrastructure transformation ahead of major religious and urban development plans.

The newspaper investigation claims that land acquisitions linked to the Chief Minister’s extended family and associated entities span across multiple years, with purchases accelerating after 2023. According to the report, these transactions include farmland and plots situated in and around key development zones, many of which are reportedly aligned with upcoming infrastructure corridors and land-use conversion areas under Ujjain’s long-term master plan.

Officials quoted in the report, however, have pushed back against any direct linkage between the Chief Minister and these transactions. They stated that members of the extended family have been involved in real estate activities for years and that no direct evidence connects official decisions with private land deals. “It is not correct to link these purchases with the Chief Minister’s official role,” the report cited unnamed state officials as saying, emphasizing that extended family members operate independently in business matters.

The allegations come at a sensitive time for Ujjain, which is preparing for large-scale infrastructural upgrades and long-term urban expansion plans connected to religious tourism and the Simhastha preparations expected in the coming years. The city has already seen increasing land values as road networks, commercial corridors, and residential zones expand under government-backed development frameworks.

According to the report, land acquisition trends in the region show a sharp rise in transactions involving individuals and entities connected to influential local networks. The data suggests that hundreds of acres have changed hands in recent years, particularly in areas marked for future urban development or improved connectivity projects.

While supporters of the state government argue that the growth reflects investor confidence and planned urban expansion, critics say the timing of the purchases raises questions that deserve transparent scrutiny. Opposition voices have started calling for clearer disclosures and independent verification of land records to ensure that public office and private interests remain distinct.

At the same time, development experts note that Ujjain’s real estate market has been undergoing structural change since the announcement of long-term master planning initiatives. As infrastructure projects expand, land values in peripheral and semi-urban areas have surged, attracting both institutional and private investors.

The controversy is likely to intensify political debate in Madhya Pradesh, especially as Ujjain’s development remains closely tied to cultural and religious tourism projects that attract national attention.
