Undertrial Prisoner Shot Dead After Attacking Police Constable During Hospital Visit in Hoshiarpur

A shocking incident in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur has drawn widespread attention after an undertrial prisoner allegedly attacked a police constable while being escorted back from a hospital visit. The violent confrontation, captured on CCTV cameras, unfolded in broad daylight and quickly escalated into a life-and-death struggle in the middle of a street.

The accused prisoner, identified as Naseeb Singh, reportedly tried to escape custody and attacked Senior Constable Jasdeep Singh with a sharp-edged weapon. What followed was a chaotic fight that ended with the prisoner dead and the injured policeman hospitalized.

According to police officials, the incident took place on Saturday afternoon when four police personnel escorted three inmates from Central Jail Hoshiarpur to Civil Hospital Hoshiarpur for a routine medical examination before their court appearance. Such hospital visits are a regular procedure for inmates who are scheduled to be produced in court.

After completing the medical check-up, the police team began transporting the prisoners back to jail in an e-rickshaw. During the journey, Naseeb Singh allegedly attempted to escape despite being handcuffed and tied to the escorting constable with a rope — a common practice used to prevent prisoners from fleeing.

Police say the confrontation began inside the e-rickshaw itself. Suddenly, the accused reportedly pulled out a sharp weapon and attacked Senior Constable Jasdeep Singh, triggering a fierce struggle between the two.

CCTV footage that has since surfaced online shows the dramatic scene. Still tied together with a rope, both men can be seen grappling violently in a narrow lane. They stumble, fall onto the road, and continue struggling as the constable tries to control the prisoner.

During the violent tussle, Naseeb Singh allegedly tried multiple times to snatch the constable’s service revolver. The situation became extremely dangerous as the prisoner attempted to gain control of the firearm while continuing the attack.

Senior police officer Sandeep Kumar Malik said that during the struggle, shots were fired from the service revolver. One of the bullets struck the accused prisoner, leaving him critically injured.

Naseeb Singh later died from the gunshot wound.

Meanwhile, Senior Constable Jasdeep Singh sustained injuries to his face, hands, and legs during the attack. Police officials said he was immediately taken for medical treatment and is currently out of danger.

Authorities also revealed that the injured constable suffers from asthma, making the physical struggle even more challenging for him during the violent encounter.

Police records indicate that Naseeb Singh was facing several serious criminal charges. Officials confirmed that at least seven cases had been registered against him, including murder, attempt to murder, and offences under the NDPS Act.

Following the incident, police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding the attack. Investigators are trying to determine how the prisoner managed to obtain a sharp-edged weapon despite being under police custody.

Officials are examining whether the weapon was picked up during the journey or whether the accused received some form of outside assistance. The investigation will also review security protocols followed during prisoner transportation.

The body of the deceased prisoner has been kept in the hospital mortuary for postmortem examination, while the injured constable continues to recover.

The dramatic CCTV footage of the struggle has now gone viral on social media, sparking debate about security arrangements during prisoner escorts and raising concerns about the safety of police personnel handling high-risk inmates.
