Amid rising temperatures across Uttar Pradesh, the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Council has revised the timing of government and council-run schools to protect children from the ongoing heatwave. The directive was issued by the Basic Education Department from Lucknow on 20 April 2026, instructing district education authorities to immediately implement the new schedule in all council-affiliated institutions.

According to the official order, classes in primary and upper primary schools will now begin earlier in the morning so that students can complete their studies before the afternoon heat intensifies. Under the revised schedule, students will attend classes from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Teachers and school staff will remain on campus until 1:30 PM to complete academic and administrative work.
Officials say the decision was taken after several districts reported intense heat conditions over the past few days. Children are considered particularly vulnerable during heatwaves, especially while commuting to school or participating in outdoor activities during peak daytime temperatures. By shifting classes to early hours, authorities aim to reduce exposure to extreme heat while ensuring that learning continues without disruption.
The order also mentions that the Mid-Day Meal program will continue under the revised timetable, with schools directed to distribute meals within the adjusted schedule. School administrations have been asked to maintain drinking water facilities, ensure proper ventilation in classrooms, and avoid outdoor activities during hot weather.
District Basic Education Officers across Uttar Pradesh have been instructed to strictly enforce the new timings and monitor compliance. Schools have also been advised to stay alert to weather advisories and take immediate precautions if heat conditions worsen further.

Parents have largely welcomed the move, saying the early timing will help keep children safe during the scorching summer days. Many guardians expressed concern in recent weeks about students traveling home during the hottest hours of the day.
Education officials indicated that the revised schedule will remain in effect until weather conditions improve. If the heatwave intensifies, authorities may consider additional protective measures for students in the coming weeks.
