The sudden closure of VR Punjab Mall has surprised shoppers and retailers across Mohali. Once one of the busiest shopping and entertainment hubs in the region, the mall has now shut its doors indefinitely after structural safety concerns emerged following the April 3 earthquake.
The management of the mall confirmed that the decision was taken immediately after a detailed structural assessment raised serious concerns about the building’s safety. The property is operated by VR Malwa Private Limited, which said the closure was necessary to ensure public safety.
According to the company, both the mall’s operations team and an independent third-party technical team inspected the building after the earthquake. Their assessment reportedly indicated that the structure may have suffered significant damage and could pose safety risks if the mall continued operating normally. Based on these findings, the board of VR Malwa decided to close the mall to the public with immediate effect.
The management said that the safety of visitors, employees, and retailers remains the top priority. Officials also stated that the decision has been communicated to local authorities as well as all stakeholders associated with the mall, including shop owners, suppliers, employees, creditors, and shareholders.
For many people in the region, the mall has been more than just a shopping destination. Over the years, it evolved into a social hotspot where families came to dine, watch movies, and spend their weekends. Residents from nearby cities like Chandigarh and Panchkula frequently visited the complex, making it one of the most recognizable retail spaces in the Tricity area.
With the closure now in effect, uncertainty has begun to grow among the hundreds of employees and retailers who depend on the mall for their livelihood. Many national and international brands operate stores inside the complex, and the halt in operations could temporarily affect business activities for several tenants.
The management has made it clear that the mall will remain closed until experts confirm that the structure is completely safe. Engineers and technical teams are expected to carry out further detailed evaluations before any decision is taken about reopening the property. Only after the building is declared structurally sound will the mall be allowed to welcome visitors again.
The property itself has an interesting history. When it first opened, the complex was known as North Country Mall, one of the largest malls in the region at the time. In 2017, after a change in management, it was rebranded as VR Punjab Mall and underwent several upgrades to enhance the shopping and entertainment experience.
In recent months, there had also been discussions about the possibility of repurposing the property into a multi-specialty hospital. While the idea attracted attention in business circles, no official development regarding that proposal has been announced so far.
