Sharing details of the conversation on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said the discussion focused on the “serious situation” developing across the region. He underscored that India is closely monitoring developments and is particularly worried about the humanitarian impact of the conflict. “Expressed deep concern over the escalation of tensions and the loss of civilian lives as well as damage to civilian infrastructure,” Modi stated.

The safety of Indian nationals living and working in the region remained a key focus of the discussion. Modi reaffirmed that protecting Indian citizens is a top priority while stressing the importance of uninterrupted movement of goods and energy supplies through critical trade routes, given the region’s significance to global energy markets.

During the conversation, Modi reiterated India’s commitment to peace and stability in West Asia, urging all parties involved to prioritize dialogue and diplomatic solutions. Earlier, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had also spoken with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss the evolving situation.

Before speaking with the Iranian President, Modi reached out to leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, and Qatar, underlining India’s efforts to maintain regional stability while protecting its strategic and economic interests.

The call came just hours after Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued a strong statement warning that Iran could leverage control over the Strait of Hormuz if tensions continue to escalate. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital oil shipping route, and any disruption there could significantly affect global energy markets.

The ongoing conflict has already impacted global oil prices, with crude crossing $100 per barrel amid fears of disruption to shipping traffic and energy infrastructure in the Persian Gulf. Despite rising tensions, President Pezeshkian has indicated that Iran is open to de-escalation under certain conditions, reaffirming Tehran’s commitment to regional peace in conversations with leaders from Russia and Pakistan.

As the situation remains fluid, India continues to monitor developments closely, advocating for dialogue, diplomacy, and the safety of its citizens while maintaining its long-standing commitment to peace and stability in West Asia.
