Two armed men posing as police officers carried out a daring daylight robbery at BEL Layout in Bengaluru, escaping with ₹20 lakh in cash and nearly half a kilogram of gold jewellery. The shocking incident took place under the jurisdiction of Byadarahalli Police Station on Monday, leaving residents deeply unsettled.

The victims, 53-year-old realtor Hombale Gowda and his wife Mangalamma, were at home with their two-and-a-half-year-old grandson when the accused arrived. According to the complaint filed with the police, the two men introduced themselves as policemen from Yelahanka. One of them was dressed in what appeared to be a sub-inspector’s uniform and carried a diary, while the other held a bag resembling those used by crime branch officials.
Trusting their appearance and claim, the family allowed them inside. Within moments, the situation turned terrifying. The men allegedly brandished a gun and a knife, threatening the couple and taking control of the house.
The accused locked Gowda inside and tied both him and his wife with tape around their hands and legs. They then entered the bedroom and collected ₹20 lakh in cash along with nearly 500 grams of gold ornaments. During the ordeal, Gowda pleaded with the robbers to spare his wife’s mangalya, the sacred wedding chain symbolising their marriage. The accused reportedly left it behind.
Before fleeing, the men snatched the victims’ mobile phones and removed the CCTV DVR from the house to prevent identification. After managing to free himself, Gowda alerted neighbours, who quickly informed the police.
Senior officers, including DCP Nagesh, visited the scene and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered at Byadarahalli Police Station, and multiple teams have been formed to trace the suspects. Investigators are examining nearby surveillance footage and mapping possible escape routes.
The brazen misuse of a police uniform has triggered serious concern among residents. Authorities have advised citizens to remain cautious and verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a police officer before allowing entry into their homes. Officials stressed that genuine officers carry proper identification and will cooperate with verification requests.
The incident serves as a stark reminder that criminals are increasingly exploiting trust and authority to execute well-planned crimes. As the investigation continues, police have assured residents that every effort is being made to track down the accused and restore confidence in the community.
