Cricket is set to return to Bengaluru’s iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium after the Karnataka Cabinet approved the hosting of Indian Premier League matches at the venue. The decision comes months after the stadium was effectively shut for major fixtures following the tragic stampede outside the ground during celebrations last year.
The state government has granted permission to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to conduct IPL matches, but not without conditions. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H. K. Patil confirmed that the Home Department will issue a special order laying down strict safety guidelines. The official notification is expected within the next two days.
Cricket activities at the stadium had remained suspended since June 2025, when celebrations marking Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden IPL title victory spiralled into tragedy. A massive crowd gathered outside the venue, leading to a stampede that claimed 11 lives and left more than 30 people injured. The incident sent shockwaves across the country and prompted serious concerns about crowd control and event management systems.
In response, the government constituted an inquiry committee headed by Justice John Michael Cunha. The panel submitted a series of recommendations aimed at strengthening infrastructure and ensuring better crowd management. Later, another review panel led by Greater Bengaluru Authority Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao was tasked with verifying whether those recommendations had been properly implemented before cricket matches could resume.
According to Minister Patil, widening the stadium gates is one of the key conditions identified during the review process. Authorities are also expected to implement enhanced crowd control measures, improved entry and exit planning, and coordinated policing arrangements. The Cabinet has made it clear that compliance with these conditions is mandatory before matches are held.
The decision paves the way for IPL 2026 fixtures in Bengaluru, restoring one of the league’s most vibrant and high-energy venues. The Chinnaswamy Stadium has long been known for its electric atmosphere and passionate home crowd support. For RCB fans, the approval represents a significant moment, signaling that the franchise could once again play in front of its home supporters.
At the same time, officials have emphasized that public safety will remain the top priority. The reopening is being treated not just as a sporting milestone but as a carefully managed step forward after a painful chapter.
During the Cabinet meeting, discussions were also held on matters related to Special Intensive Revision processes being conducted in certain areas. The Law and Parliamentary Affairs Department has been directed to examine the procedure and submit a detailed report by the end of the month.
