Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula See Rain on First Day of 2026

Residents of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali stepped into the New Year under cloudy skies and light rain as scattered drizzles swept across the Tricity on Thursday morning. The refreshing showers, though mild, brought a noticeable dip in temperature, making the winter chill sharper across the region.

The change in weather came exactly as forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which had issued alerts for rainfall and fog across northern India during the New Year period.

Western Disturbance Behind the Sudden Weather Shift

According to IMD scientists, an active western disturbance currently hovering over North Pakistan is driving this shift in weather patterns. This system is pushing moisture-laden winds towards northern India, triggering light to moderate rainfall in plains and snowfall in higher altitudes.

Dr Naresh Kumar, an IMD scientist, said the impact of this system will continue over the next two to three days. He added that the Western Himalayan region is likely to experience continued rainfall and snowfall, while nearby plains may see intermittent showers.

Rain and Clouds Increase Winter Chill Across North India

Besides the Tricity, several parts of Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan and Delhi-NCR remained under thick cloud cover, with occasional drizzles reported from multiple locations. The cloudy skies have significantly reduced daytime temperatures, making the cold more biting, especially in the mornings and evenings.

Meteorologists say such weather systems often deepen winter conditions, as moisture in the air combined with low temperatures creates a bone-chilling atmosphere.

Fog Alert Issued for Several States

The IMD has also warned of dense to very dense fog across large parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Poor visibility during early morning and late-night hours is expected to affect road, rail and flight operations over the coming days.

Authorities have advised commuters to remain cautious and follow traffic advisories as visibility may drop sharply in some areas.

Light Rain Expected to Continue

Weather experts believe that light rainfall may continue intermittently across the region. Delhi-NCR is also likely to witness very light showers, adding to the cold conditions in the capital and surrounding areas.

The combination of rain, fog and overcast skies is expected to keep temperatures below normal for early January.

A Chilly Start to the New Year

As 2026 begins, residents across North India are bracing for a prolonged spell of wintery weather. While the gentle rain has brought freshness to the air, it has also signaled a colder and foggier few days ahead.

Meteorologists advise people to stay warm, keep track of weather updates, and plan travel carefully as the western disturbance continues to influence the region.
