Chandigarh | October 11, 2025: In a deeply emotional outburst, senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, wife of late Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, has accused the Chandigarh Police of handling her husband’s body in an “undignified and insensitive manner.”

Speaking exclusively Amneet alleged that the police took her husband’s body from the hospital for post-mortem without any family member present, despite her clear instructions to the contrary.
“Where Was the Dignity?”
“I had agreed to the post-mortem,” Amneet said, her voice trembling with emotion. “But I had clearly told them that our children would pay their last respects to their father before the procedure. In complete disregard, they took away the body for post-mortem even when no one from the family was present.”
She further stated that the Chandigarh Police failed to show basic human dignity toward her deceased husband, emphasizing that the late IPS officer belonged to the Dalit community.
‘What Was the Rush?’
Visibly distressed, the IAS officer questioned the urgency shown by the authorities.
“What was the rush? Let the Chandigarh Police explain their conduct,” she said. “I am a Dalit widow being denied dignity in how my husband’s body is treated. If the family’s consent is so irrelevant, let them do what they want. I have stayed quiet till now, but this is going completely out of hand.”
Amneet also raised concerns that vital evidence might have been compromised when the body was shifted from GMSH-16 to PGIMER, where the post-mortem was scheduled to be conducted.
“Crucial evidence may have been destroyed during the transfer. The Chandigarh Police will be responsible for any lapses,” she alleged.
Police Admit Communication Gap
Responding to the allegations, Chandigarh DGP Sagar Preet Hooda admitted that there had been a communication gap between the police and the family.
“There was a communication gap,” Hooda told reporters. “We will not proceed with the post-mortem until the family gives its consent. The SSP is accompanying the body, and the process will begin only once the family agrees.”
The police have also confirmed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the circumstances surrounding the IPS officer’s death, which is suspected to be a case of suicide.
Family Still in Shock
The family of the late officer remains deeply disturbed by the sequence of events. As of Friday afternoon, the post-mortem had not begun, though the body had already been taken to PGI Chandigarh.
The situation has sparked debate over protocols, sensitivity, and respect in handling cases involving senior officers and their families, especially in situations of grief and tragedy.
