Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Chhannulal Mishra passed away at 89 after a prolonged illness. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled his demise, remembering his invaluable contribution to Indian music.

A Musical Icon Bids Farewell

Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, passed away early Thursday morning at the age of 89. Family members confirmed that he breathed his last around 4 am after battling age-related health complications.

Mishra, who had been living in Mirzapur with his youngest daughter, had been hospitalized for nearly three weeks before returning home, where his condition worsened on Wednesday night.

His daughter, Namrata Mishra, said, “He was admitted to the hospital for the last 17-18 days with age-related issues. He passed away at home this morning at around 4.”

Born in Azamgarh in 1936, Chhannulal Mishra emerged as one of the most respected voices of Hindustani classical music. He was trained under his father Badri Prasad Mishra, Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan of the Kirana gharana, and Thakur Jaidev Singh.

Over decades, he carved a niche as an exponent of the Banaras gharana and the Purab Ang tradition of Thumri. His repertoire spanned Khayal, Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, Kajri, and Bhajans, enchanting audiences across India and beyond.

His immense contribution to music was recognized by the Government of India with the Padma Bhushan in 2010 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2020.

Last Rites and Family

Mishra’s last rites will be performed in Varanasi at 5 pm. He is survived by his son, tabla player Ramkumar Mishra, and three daughters. His wife had passed away four years ago.

PM Modi’s Tribute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over Mishra’s demise. In a condolence message on X, Modi said the singer’s contribution to Indian music was unparalleled.

“Pandit Chhannulal Mishra made an invaluable contribution to taking classical music to the masses and establishing the Indian tradition globally. It was my good fortune to always receive his affection and blessings,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister also recalled that Mishra was among the proposers of his candidature from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in 2014.
