Balkaur Singh, the father of slain Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, has announced his decision to contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections from the Mansa constituency. The announcement comes just days before the third death anniversary of his son, who was brutally gunned down in Mansa’s Jawarhke village on May 29, 2022.

Balkaur Singh made it clear that his move into politics is not for power but to seek justice for his son from within the system. “If justice cannot be delivered from the outside, I will fight from within,” he said, emotionally addressing Moosewala’s supporters and well-wishers.
Singh expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current state government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, accusing it of failing to take meaningful action against gangsters operating both in and outside Punjab. His sharpest criticism was directed towards the unfulfilled promises regarding the arrest of Goldy Brar, the Canada-based gangster who is believed to be the mastermind behind Moosewala’s murder. Despite multiple assurances from the authorities, Goldy Brar continues to remain at large.
Balkaur Singh’s decision is also rooted in a broader mission: restoring public safety and becoming a voice for the common people. He emphasized that his political journey will center around justice, accountability, and giving a platform to those who have been silenced or ignored by the system.
It’s worth noting that Sidhu Moosewala himself had contested from the same Mansa seat in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections on a Congress ticket. He lost during the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) wave, which swept across the state.
As Moosewala’s third death anniversary approaches, preparations are in full swing at his cremation site in Musa village. A “path” ceremony is scheduled to take place, where thousands of fans are expected to gather and pay tribute. His statue at the cremation ground has also been refurbished, and tents have been installed to accommodate the large turnout anticipated for the event.
Meanwhile, the legal proceedings in Moosewala’s murder case have faced a significant blow with the death of retired SHO Angrej Singh on May 24, 2025. Angrej, who was the first investigating officer in the case and a key witness, passed away after a prolonged illness just a day after missing a court hearing due to medical reasons. His absence is being seen as a potential setback in the prosecution’s ability to present a solid case, given his deep firsthand knowledge of the investigation.
To date, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has filed five charge sheets against 32 individuals, including notorious gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi, Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, and Goldy Brar. In May 2024, the Mansa Sessions Court framed charges against 27 of the arrested accused. However, since Goldy Brar remains untraceable, charges against him are yet to be framed.
The prosecution maintains that Moosewala’s killing was part of an ongoing gang rivalry between the Bishnoi and Bambiha groups. Eyewitnesses Gurwinder and Gurpreet, who were with Moosewala at the time of the attack, have already testified and identified four of the shooters—Priyavart Fauji, Ankit Sersa, Deepak Mundi, and Kashish alias Kuldeep—as well as Jagroop Singh Roopa and Manpreet Singh Mannu Kussa, both of whom were later killed in a police encounter.
One of the most disturbing revelations came from Gurwinder, who confirmed the involvement of Sandeep Kekra. Sandeep allegedly provided real-time updates about Moosewala’s movements to Goldy Brar, even going so far as to take selfies with the singer outside his house just moments before the ambush.
Balkaur Singh is now scheduled to appear in court on June 4 to give his testimony. However, legal experts and police officials worry that the absence of the original investigating officer may weaken the prosecution’s case. “It’s difficult to replicate what the first officer knew and saw during the early days of the probe,” said a senior official.
As Punjab gears up for a new political chapter, Balkaur Singh’s entry into politics adds emotional weight and urgency to a case that has captured national attention. Whether justice will be served remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—Sidhu Moosewala’s legacy continues to echo far beyond the music world.
