Ludhiana, January 20 – In a historic moment for Ludhiana, Inderjit Kaur was elected as the city’s first woman Mayor. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced her appointment through a post on X (formerly Twitter) earlier today.
Inderjit Kaur, 37, brings over a decade of experience in education and is a first-time councillor from ward number 13. She holds a commerce degree, an MBA, and a BEd. Previously serving as a principal in a private school, Kaur stepped down from her position to contest in the Municipal Corporation elections. She also serves as the president of the women’s wing of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the Ludhiana district.
The Ludhiana mayoral seat, reserved for a woman, saw names like Nidhi Gupta, Amrit Varsha Rampal, and Maninder Kaur Ghuman in contention before Kaur’s election. Her husband is a businessman, and her journey into politics marks a new chapter for the city.
Rakesh Parashar was elected as the Senior Deputy Mayor. A five-time councillor and former Congress leader, Parashar is the brother of Ludhiana Central MLA Ashok Parashar Pappi. Prince Johar was elected as the Deputy Mayor.
In the opposition ranks, Shyam Sunder Malhotra will serve as the Leader of Opposition in the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, with Deepika Bhalla and Harminder Pal Lally taking the positions of Senior Vice Leader and Vice Leader, respectively.
The swearing-in ceremony and the election to the post of Mayor were held at Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan, marking a significant milestone in the city’s political landscape.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann extended his congratulations to the newly elected leaders and expressed hope for a progressive and inclusive governance under their leadership.
