Indian health authorities have allayed public fears over a Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China, saying there is no immediate cause for alarm. The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), under the Union Health Ministry, is actively monitoring the situation in coordination with international health agencies.
Monitoring Efforts in India
According to official reports, the NCDC is closely monitoring the prevalent respiratory infections and seasonal influenza trend in India. “The situation in India is well under control,” said Dr. Atul Goel, DGHS.
We have analyzed the data on respiratory outbreaks within the country, and there has been no significant increase in cases during December 2024. There are no reports of large-scale infections from any of our institutions. There is nothing to be alarmed about at present,” Dr. Goel was quoted as saying by PTI.
Health officials said that respiratory infections are usually at their peak during winter, and hospitals are equipped with all the necessary infrastructure and supplies to handle such cases. Dr. Goel said that though HMPV is a respiratory virus like the common cold, it mainly affects young children, elderly people, and immunocompromised patients.
About Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)
HMPV is an enveloped, single-stranded, negative-sense RNA virus of the Pneumoviridae family and of the Metapneumovirus genus. It has been documented that this virus causes both upper and lower respiratory illness in individuals of all age groups. The CDC reported symptoms similar to those associated with other respiratory infections and included fever, cough, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, and wheezing. It can lead to complications such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia in severe cases, especially among the high-risk groups.
The virus spreads mainly through close contact, including handshakes or exposure to respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing.
Global Concerns
The resurgence of HMPV has brought alarm to the rest of the world, particularly in high-density populations. Experts such as Dr. Arjun Dang, CEO of Dr. Dang’s Lab, have pointed out that the virus has hitherto been an underrecognized contributor to seasonal respiratory illnesses.
“At Dr. Dang’s Lab, we have regularly reported HMPV cases during flu seasons, particularly in susceptible populations such as young children and elderly individuals. The China outbreak underlines the necessity for intensified surveillance and early detection systems to prevent it,” Dr. Dang told ANI.
Reports are on the increase of HMPV cases in children under 14 years of age in northern provinces of China. Chinese health authorities have developed a pilot system to monitor pneumonia of unknown origin as part of their efforts to track respiratory illnesses.
Preparedness in India
Indian health officials have given assurances that there is enough preparedness of hospitals to handle any rise in respiratory conditions. “During winters, there is usually an uptick in respiratory infections, and our hospitals are equipped with necessary supplies and beds,” Dr. Goel said.
Citizens are encouraged to practice basic hygiene, such as frequent handwashing and covering the mouth while coughing or sneezing, to reduce the risk of infection. Vulnerable groups are encouraged to take extra precautions, such as avoiding crowded places during peak flu season.
While the news of an HMPV outbreak in China is creating a buzz, Indian health officials claim that the situation is in control here. There is no reason to panic, as long as the vigilance and preventive measures are maintained. The authorities will update as soon as the information is available.
For now, the best defenses against seasonal respiratory illnesses are maintaining vigilance and good hygiene.
