Mumbai Boat Capsize: On Wednesday, December 18, a tragic incident occurred near Mumbai when a passenger boat, Neelkamal, carrying over 50 people, capsized while traveling from Gateway of India to Elephanta Island. The mishap claimed one life, and the body has been recovered. Rescue efforts have successfully saved 20 passengers so far, who are now onboard the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship Subhadra Kumari Chauhan.
According to reports, the boat had collided with a pilot vessel near its stern near Kunja, Uran. Agencies like the Coast Guard, Navy, Yellowgate Police Station, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, and local fishermen are currently conducting rescue operations. Four helicopters have also been sent for search operation to rescue the remaining passengers.
Chief Minister Fadnavis took to X to confirm all resources have been mobilised for an expedited rescue process. “Boats from the Navy, Coast Guard, Port, and Police teams were immediately dispatched for assistance. Fortunately, most citizens have been rescued. However, rescue operations are still underway,” he stated.

Passengers on board described chaotic scenes as the boat capsized. Fishing vessels in the locality were the first to respond, saving several lives before formal rescue operations began. An investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the collision between the Neelkamal and the pilot vessel, with initial reports suggesting an impact near the stern of the latter.
Rescue teams continue their efforts, and authorities are hopeful about finding the remaining passengers.
