Nine Workers Lose Lives in Chennai Building Collapse
Chennai, Tamil Nadu — Tragedy struck on Tuesday as an under-construction building at the Ennore Thermal Power Station in Chennai collapsed, claiming the lives of nine migrant workers, police confirmed. The victims, hailing from Assam, were involved in construction work carried out by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, MK Stalin, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended his condolences to the families of the deceased.
“I am deeply saddened to hear that nine workers from Assam lost their lives in an accident that occurred during the construction work carried out by BHEL in Ennore. I convey my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives,” CM Stalin wrote in a social media post.
Relief Measures and Compensation Announced
Following the tragic accident, CM Stalin directed Minister for Electricity S.S. Sivasankar and senior IAS officer K Radhakrishnan, Chairman of TANGEDCO, to personally oversee the relief operations at the site.
The Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each family of the deceased and instructed authorities to arrange for the transportation of the mortal remains back to their home state of Assam.
Police sources confirmed that investigations into the collapse are underway, with officers already on the site to assess the situation.
Injured Workers and Medical Assistance
Several workers sustained injuries in the collapse and are receiving treatment at Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President, K Selvaperunthagai, expressed his grief over the tragedy, urging for strict safety measures in all ongoing construction projects.
“On behalf of the Tamil Nadu Congress, I extend my deep condolences to the bereaved family members. I wish those injured a speedy recovery,” Selvaperunthagai said.

This incident has sparked renewed concerns over safety protocols at construction sites in Tamil Nadu, especially in projects managed by large public sector undertakings. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough inquiry into the circumstances leading to the collapse.
