26 Naxalites Killed: Over 26 Naxalites, including top cadres, were killed in a massive encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Abhujmad-Indravati region. Combing operations continue. Read full details.

Chhattisgarh, May 21, 2025: In one of the biggest crackdowns on Naxal insurgents in recent years, more than 26 Naxalites were killed during a fierce encounter with security forces in the dense forests between Abhujmad and Indravati National Park, located on the border of Narayanpur and Bijapur districts in Chhattisgarh.
The operation, which took place on Tuesday evening, was led by a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) from four districts. The anti-Naxal operation was launched based on intelligence inputs about the presence of a large number of Maoist cadres in the forest region.
Speaking on the development, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma, who also holds the Home portfolio, confirmed the elimination of over 26 Naxals, some of whom are suspected to be top-ranking leaders within the outlawed group. “The operation was highly successful. More than 26 Naxalites, including possibly senior cadres, have been neutralized. However, we also lost a brave local supporter and one of our DRG jawans sustained injuries,” Sharma said.
The identity of the deceased Naxals is being verified, and sources suggest that the number of casualties may rise as combing operations are still underway in the thick forested terrain. The injured police jawan has been shifted to a nearby medical facility and is reported to be out of danger.
This latest encounter comes amid a renewed push by Chhattisgarh’s security apparatus to dismantle Naxalite strongholds in remote and inaccessible forest zones. The Abhujmad region, known for its difficult terrain and lack of connectivity, has long served as a hideout for Naxal leadership and operational bases.
Local residents reported hearing heavy gunfire echoing from the forest on Tuesday, and several Naxal camps are believed to have been destroyed during the exchange.
A Big Blow to Naxal Insurgency
Security experts are calling this encounter a major setback for Naxal activities in Central India. The death of several high-level cadres is expected to disrupt planning and coordination among Maoist ranks in the region.
“Operations like these not only weaken the enemy’s manpower but also create panic and disarray in their ranks,” a senior police official involved in the operation told our correspondent.
Government Vows to Continue Crackdown
Deputy CM Sharma praised the courage and determination of the security forces, stating, “This is a proud moment for Chhattisgarh. Our forces have once again shown that we will not tolerate violence and will continue to work for peace and security in our state.”
He further assured that anti-Naxal operations will continue with greater intensity, and the government will provide all necessary support to the security personnel operating in hostile terrain.
