20-Year-Old Woman Shot Dead by Father and Cousin in Madhya Pradesh: Police Witness Tragedy, Accused Flee

In a ghastly incident coming from Madhya Pradesh’s Adarsh Nagar, a 20-year-old girl named Tanu Gurjar was brutally murdered by her father Mahesh Gurjar and cousin Rahul Gurjar in front of police officers. The drama unfolded on Tuesday evening around 7 PM when Mahesh and Rahul shot Tanu multiple times using a pistol and a rifle when the female station head and two constables from Maharajpura police station were present.

Tanu was in a relationship with her boyfriend, Bhupendra Mavai from Agra, since the past six years. But her family never liked this relationship, and they threatened to marry her off on 18 January without her consent, which is a day away. The girl refused to do so, and she broadcasted her tale on social media using a video clip. In this video, she aired her family torture and their reluctance to let her marry the love of her life.

“Hello, my name is Tanu Gurjar. I want to tell you that I am deeply in love with a boy. Initially, my family had agreed to the marriage, but then they refused,” she stated while pleading for her right to choose her partner.

The Maharajpura police had gone to Tanu’s house in the morning after her video became viral. They were trying to mediate and resolve the conflict. However, the situation turned sour when Tanu refused to give in to her family’s demands. Infuriated by her act of defiance, Mahesh and Rahul opened fire, killing her in front of the police.

The officers were caught off guard and were unable to prevent the crime. The accused ran away after the shooting, leaving the police to scramble for a response.

Later, Mahesh returned to the area with his rifle menacingly. CSP Nagendra Singh Sikrvar, along with reinforcements from Maharajpura and Gola Ka Mandir police stations, managed to catch him after a brief scuffle. Rahul is still absconding, and efforts are on to trace him.

This incident has raised some question on the issue of police negligence and their failure to prevent this tragedy when they were already present there. Critics say that police could have brought both parties to their station for counseling, which would have perhaps avoided this fatal result. It is also now known that the police had assured Tanu of safety and promised her that they would not leave her alone until this matter resolved.

An FIR has been registered at Gola Ka Mandir police station, which comes under the jurisdiction of the crime. The police investigation is going on. Police teams have intensified their search for the absconding accused, Rahul.

This shocking incident points to the urgent need for stronger measures to deal with honor-based violence and ensure that women can exercise their right to choose their partners without fear of retribution. Tanu’s tragic story is a grim reminder of the deep-seated societal issues that continue to claim innocent lives.
