Tibet Earthquake: At least 126 people have died after a massive earthquake struck Tibet, leaving the region to struggle with the effects of widespread destruction and a humanitarian crisis. The rescue efforts have intensified, but subzero temperatures overnight, with -16°C (3.2°F), have complicated rescue work and critical assistance to possible survivors.
The quake occurred early this morning and had severely destroyed houses and infrastructures. According to reports, authorities have said that the level of destruction was overwhelming. Casualties are estimated to increase in number as rescue workers clear up the debris scattered throughout the cities. Over 1,000 members of the military and armed police were already on their way to rescue survivors while 1,000 others are in stand-by as confirmed by reports of state media.
Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his condolences to Chinese President Xi Jinping, expressing sympathy for the victims and their families. The Dalai Lama also offered prayers for the victims, conveying deep sadness over the widespread devastation.
In Tingri County, local authorities have organized a rescue team made up of transport, water conservancy, and housing officials as well as village leaders from the locality. They are struggling in freezing temperatures as they try to save people’s lives.
The China Earthquake Networks Center reported up to Tuesday evening that about 150 aftershocks had been recorded, with 19 measuring 3.0 or higher. The country’s residents as well as rescue teams are afraid of these aftershocks that also make the operations complicated.
China has deployed significant military resources to the disaster zone. The rescue operation includes the provision of emergency supplies, medical assistance, and temporary shelters for displaced residents. Helicopters and heavy machinery have been dispatched to assist in clearing debris and reaching remote areas.
Survivors are battling extreme cold while waiting to be rescued or given shelter. Temperatures dropped to life-threatening levels, forcing warm clothing, heating, and temporary housing needs. Relief teams are racing the clock to distribute these supplies.
