In a historic auction of fancy vehicle registration numbers in Chandigarh, the coveted 0001 registration number was sold for a whopping ₹36.43 lakh, marking the highest-ever bid received by the Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA), Chandigarh. The e-auction, which was held from August 19 to 22, witnessed record participation and unprecedented bids.

Chandigarh’s Highest-Ever Auction Revenue
The RLA successfully auctioned 577 registration numbers from the new series CH01-DA (0001 to 9999), along with some leftover premium numbers from previous series. The auction set a new benchmark by generating a record-breaking revenue of ₹4.08 crore, the highest ever in Chandigarh’s history.
According to officials, this auction has surpassed all previous figures, even beating the earlier record of ₹31 lakh for the same fancy number ‘0001’ in May this year.
Top Bids from the Auction
The ‘0001’ number was the star of the auction, but several other numbers also fetched remarkable prices:
- CH01DA0003 – ₹17.84 lakh

Growing Craze for Fancy Numbers
In recent years, Chandigarh has emerged as a hotspot for luxury car owners and business elites who are willing to pay hefty sums for exclusive registration numbers. Owning a unique number plate has become a status symbol, often associated with prestige, wealth, and personal identity.
Experts say that auctions like these not only highlight the rising demand for fancy numbers but also help government authorities generate significant revenue.
The sale of ‘0001’ for ₹36.43 lakh has once again proved the unmatched popularity of this number in Chandigarh’s vehicle registration auctions. With the RLA breaking records with every new series, it is clear that the craze for fancy numbers is here to stay — and will likely set even higher benchmarks in the future.
